Are eating disorders genetic?

Recent research has found that there is a correlation between one’s genetic code and developing an eating disorder.
Several research studies have shown that people with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa share a common genetic variant. There are not as many studies on bulimia or binge eating disorders, but one small research study did show a connection.
Right now, studies indicate that 40% -60% chance of developing anorexia nervosa is related to genes. About 30%-50% chance is related to environmental factors. The percentages are similar, but it is clear that genes play a bigger role than we might have guessed.
We definitely have enough information to know that anorexia runs in families. If you have a family member with anorexia, you are 11 times more likely to develop the disorder.
